About Dr Bhupen Hazarika
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was an Indian singer, songwriter, poet, and filmmaker who made a significant contribution to Indian art and culture. Born on September 8, 1926, in Sadiya, Assam, Hazarika was a multi-talented artist who enriched the cultural heritage of India with his unique style and compositions.
Hazarika’s musical journey began at a young age when he learned to play various instruments like the harmonium, dhol, and mandolin. He studied at Banaras Hindu University, where he earned a Master’s degree in Political Science and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication.
Hazarika’s music was heavily influenced by the Assamese folk tradition, and he often incorporated elements of Assamese folk music into his compositions. His songs were known for their poignant lyrics, soulful melodies, and powerful messages.
One of Hazarika’s most significant achievements was his contribution to the Assamese film industry. He wrote and directed several acclaimed films, including “Shakuntala,” “Pratidhwani,” and “Loti Ghoti.” He was also a prolific songwriter and composed the music for many films.
Hazarika’s contribution to Indian music was recognized with numerous awards, including the Padma Shri in 1977, the Padma Bhushan in 2001, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2012. He was also honored with the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the Assamese film “Chameli Memsaab” in 1976.
Aside from his musical and cinematic achievements, Hazarika was also a social activist and a champion of human rights. He worked tirelessly to promote social justice and equality, particularly for the marginalized communities of Assam.
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika passed away on November 5, 2011, but his legacy lives on through his music, films, and activism. He remains an icon of Indian culture and an inspiration to generations of artists and activists.
