In a moment of immense pride for Assam, Major Bhargav Kalita, serving with the Kumaon Regiment, has been conferred the prestigious Shaurya Chakra for his extraordinary courage and leadership in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu & Kashmir. Stationed with the 50 Rashtriya Rifles, the world’s largest force dedicated to counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency, Major Kalita operated in high-threat areas such as Pulwama, Awantipora, Budgam, and Srinagar.
Leading from the front, Major Kalita spearheaded several critical missions that resulted in the elimination of numerous high-value terrorists, including district commanders who were masterminds behind recruiting youth into terror networks and orchestrating attacks on security forces and civilians. His efforts also led to the capture of key overground workers who facilitated logistical and tactical support for terrorist groups.
The Shaurya Chakra was awarded as part of a broader announcement by President Droupadi Murmu on the eve of Independence Day, which included 127 gallantry awards and 40 distinguished service awards for personnel across the armed forces and the Central Armed Police Forces.
Hailing from Rampur (Sujanpara) village in Kamrup district, Major Kalita is the son of Maj Gen (retd) Bhaskar Kalita and Bobita Kalita, both esteemed figures in Assam. His achievement highlights the bravery and dedication of Assam’s youth in safeguarding the nation.
