Assam’s Minister for Water Resources, Pijush Hazarika, conducted a comprehensive one-day inspection tour of Tamulpur district on Sunday to evaluate the progress of critical embankment projects being constructed within the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.
The ministerial visit focused on four major embankment construction sites employing advanced geo mega tube technology, representing a significant investment in flood and erosion control infrastructure for the region. These projects collectively cover 13 kilometers of embankments with a total investment of approximately Rs. 19.94 crore.
Key Project Sites Inspected
The Minister’s inspection tour covered four strategic locations within Tamulpur district:
- Dikpar (Ghatirpam) near Goreswar: A 3.5-kilometer embankment along the Suklai River being constructed at a cost of Rs. 5.75 crore under the SOPD (G) scheme.
- Kakatichuba (Bholajhar): A 2.1-kilometer embankment project with an estimated investment of Rs. 2.65 crore.
- Palokata to Balabari stretch in Tamulpur: A 4.7-kilometer embankment project costing Rs. 6.44 crore.
- Chapatal to Gohain Kamal Ali section: A 3-kilometer embankment with an allocated budget of Rs. 5.10 crore.
Advanced Technology Implementation
The projects showcase the Water Resources Department’s adoption of innovative geo mega tube technology, which involves large cylindrical tubes made of high-strength geotextile fabric filled with sand or soil. This approach provides superior structural stability compared to traditional embankment construction methods.
Hydrological experts note that this technology has proven particularly effective in regions facing severe erosion challenges, as the flexible structure can better withstand water forces while maintaining integrity over longer periods.
Development Focus in BTR
Minister Hazarika emphasized that these projects align with the broader development vision for the Bodoland Territorial Region under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership.
“The Assam Government remains committed to the holistic development of BTR, with particular emphasis on flood control as a key policy area,” he stated, highlighting the critical importance of effective flood management for protecting infrastructure, agricultural productivity, and community wellbeing.
The Minister also noted the political dimension of development work in the region, asserting that “the BJP and its alliance partner UPPL is ushering in a period of rapid development in BTR and with the people’s support this growth will continue.”
