In a major anti-corruption raid, Assam’s Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell (SVC) seized over Rs 1.7 crore in cash and a large quantity of gold and diamond jewellery from the home of Circle Officer Nupur Bora and her associate, officials announced on Monday.
The operations targeted Bora, posted in the Goroimari revenue circle of Kamrup district, and Lat Mandal Surajit Deka of Barpeta, with searches conducted at multiple sites in Guwahati and Barpeta. At Bora’s residence in Gotanagar, Maligaon, vigilance teams recovered approximately Rs 1.7 crore in cash and jewellery, with the cash count being verified by the State Bank of India. Additionally, around Rs 10 lakh in cash was found at Deka’s home in Dangarkuchi, Barpeta.
Officials revealed that Bora and Deka had returned to Guwahati from Arunachal Pradesh late Sunday night, just before the raids began early Monday. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, commenting on the case, accused Bora of orchestrating large-scale illegal land deals during her Barpeta tenure. “After six months of monitoring, we seized over Rs 1.7 crore from her residence. The government will not tolerate such corruption,” Sarma declared.
Bora, who joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019, previously worked in Barpeta and Karbi Anglong and has faced persistent allegations of misconduct, including a multi-crore land scam in Barpeta. New corruption complaints emerged after her transfer to Goroimari. Authorities are now investigating several bank lockers held by Bora in Barpeta and Golaghat. “The raids continue, and we’ll know the full extent of illicit assets once the lockers are examined,” a vigilance official stated.
