Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday held separate meetings with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and Union Minister for Railways, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi to review key infrastructure and development projects in the state.
During his meeting with the Civil Aviation Minister, the Chief Minister reviewed the progress of six proposed greenfield airports planned at Silchar, Manas, Umrangso, Majuli, Diphu and Charaideo, along with a proposed heliport at Haflong.
Sarma said the Assam Government has completed most of the preparatory work for the proposed greenfield airport at Silchar and urged the Ministry of Civil Aviation to expedite the approval process.
For the remaining proposed airports, both sides agreed to accelerate pre-feasibility studies to enable the projects to move to the next stage at the earliest.
The meeting also reviewed the ongoing expansion of Rupsi Airport, which has become an important regional aviation hub in western Assam.
The proposed airports are expected to improve regional air connectivity, enhance access to remote areas and strengthen Assam's position as a transportation and logistics gateway for Northeast India.
Later, the Chief Minister met Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss initiatives aimed at accelerating Assam's industrial growth and infrastructure development.
Sarma sought support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to establish Assam as an important part of India's semiconductor ecosystem. He highlighted the state's plans to develop both upstream and downstream semiconductor capabilities, including fabrication and packaging facilities.
The meeting also focused on major railway infrastructure projects. The Chief Minister discussed the proposed Lanka–Umrangso railway line, which is expected to improve connectivity in Assam's hill districts.
He also urged the early implementation of the proposed India–Bhutan railway project, saying it would strengthen regional connectivity, boost cross-border trade and support economic development.
