The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police busted a major marijuana smuggling racket on Wednesday, recovering contraband over 4,000 kgs valued at Rs 10 crore in the illegal market.
Acting on specific input, an STF team intercepted a truck ferrying the cache hidden under raw rubber consignment in Guwahati’s Beharbari region early morning.
Two smugglers identified as Raju Sharma (46) and Biswajit Das (29) were apprehended during the operation. Both are Assam residents.
Interrogation revealed the vehicle originating from Tripura was headed to deliver the narcotics in West Bengal before plans were foiled.
STF Deputy Inspector General Partha Sarathi Mahanta said initial probes indicate involvement of more operatives in the trafficking network spanning multiple states.
A case was registered under NDPS Act against the duo while further investigation aims to unravel entire supply chain links.
The size of the seized illegal stash points to a deep nexus between drug peddlers from the Northeast and cartels in other parts of the country.
Experts noted border porosity, lack of economic opportunities and high domestic demand continue fueling the contraband trade despite frequent crackdowns.
Mahanta asserted the latest arrests represent a body blow to organized groups misusing the region as transit for multi-crore drug shipment. Police aim to permanently dismantle these channels threatening youth and communities.
