Captain Amit Prakash was awarded the prestigious Shaurya Chakra for displaying exceptional courage and leadership during a counter-insurgency operation in Assam's Nagaon district on June 24, 2000.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of armed militants in the Lutuman Reserve Forest, Captain Amit Prakash led an operation in the densely forested area despite difficult terrain and operational challenges. After a demanding trek, the security team established a cordon around the suspected location and launched a search operation at first light.

As the team advanced towards the target area, they came under intense small-arms fire from militants hiding within the forest. Displaying remarkable bravery under fire, Captain Amit Prakash charged towards the source of the attack through a hail of bullets and neutralised one militant at close range.

During the operation, he identified another armed militant positioned nearby. Despite the danger, Captain Amit Prakash moved swiftly to contain the area and called upon the militant to surrender. However, the militant responded by hurling a grenade towards the security personnel.

Recognising the threat to his troops, Captain Amit Prakash quickly reorganised his team and, along with a fellow soldier, manoeuvred to the rear of the militant's position. In a daring tactical move, he successfully engaged and neutralised the second militant, bringing the operation to a successful conclusion.

His courage, determination and leadership under extremely hazardous conditions helped eliminate the threat while ensuring the safety of fellow soldiers. In recognition of his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Amit Prakash was conferred the Shaurya Chakra, one of India's highest peacetime gallantry awards.

The operation remains a notable example of the bravery displayed by Indian Army personnel in safeguarding peace and security in Assam during challenging counter-insurgency operations.
