The Assam-Meghalaya CM duo, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, held a pivotal meeting on Monday evening at the State Guest House in Koinadhara, Guwahati, to tackle pressing inter-state concerns. The Assam-Meghalaya CM discussions centered on resolving the long-standing border dispute, advancing a joint power and irrigation project, and addressing urban flooding in Guwahati.
Assam-Meghalaya CM Pushes for Border Dispute Resolution
In a joint press conference, Assam-Meghalaya CM Sarma highlighted progress on the border issue. “With Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s guidance, we resolved six of the 12 boundary disputes. By August 15, we plan to erect boundary pillars in five resolved areas, with minor challenges remaining in Pillingkata,” Sarma said. The Assam-Meghalaya CM dialogue remains ongoing for the six unresolved areas.
Assam-Meghalaya CM Sangma confirmed that pillars in five of the six resolved areas will likely be installed by August 15. “We’re addressing minor issues in Gijang and Tarabari, likely favoring Meghalaya,” he said, underscoring the cooperative spirit between the Assam-Meghalaya CM leadership.
Joint Power and Irrigation Project
The Assam-Meghalaya CM meeting also greenlit a 55 MW joint power and irrigation project. “We’ve agreed to jointly commission this project, which will benefit both states,” Sarma stated, emphasizing the Assam-Meghalaya CM commitment to shared development.
Tackling Urban Flooding in Guwahati
With Guwahati reeling from severe flooding due to incessant rainfall, the Assam-Meghalaya CM leaders tasked the North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) with conducting a satellite-based study. “NESAC will deliver detailed imaging of forest areas, water flow, and waterlogging within three months,” Sarma noted. The data will be analyzed by IIT Roorkee to devise actionable flood mitigation strategies.
Assam-Meghalaya CM Sangma reinforced the need for a scientific approach. “This study will clarify hydrological and environmental factors, enabling the Assam-Meghalaya CM teams to craft solutions that benefit both states while addressing livelihood concerns in Meghalaya,” he said.
A Unified Approach Amid Flood Crisis
The Assam-Meghalaya CM meeting comes as both states battle severe flooding, with Assam facing widespread displacement and submerged agricultural lands. The Assam-Meghalaya CM collaboration reflects a unified approach to resolving shared challenges.
“This meeting underscores the strong friendship between the Assam-Meghalaya CM leadership and our states,” Sangma said, expressing confidence in achieving tangible outcomes for mutual benefit.
