Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office to the newly appointed Vice-Chancellors of seven state universities on Friday at Raj Bhavan, Guwahati. The ceremony, attended by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, and senior state officials, underscored the Assam government’s commitment to enhancing academic leadership and aligning with national educational reforms.
The newly appointed Vice-Chancellors of seven state universities are:
- Prof. Mahadev Patgiri, Sibsagar University
- Prof. Ganesh Chandra Wary, Kokrajhar University
- Prof. Niranjan Roy, Gurucharan University, Silchar
- Prof. Jyoti Prasad Saikia, Jagannath Barooah University
- Prof. Hitesh Deka, Nagaon University
- Prof. Mukul Bora, North Lakhimpur University
In his address, Governor Acharya emphasized the critical role of academic leadership in shaping Assam’s future. He urged the Vice-Chancellors to prioritize quality education, academic discipline, and institution-building with vision and integrity. Sharing his thoughts on X, the Governor wrote, “Today at Raj Bhavan, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellors of seven universities in the state were administered their oath of office. On this august occasion, Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma Ji, Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu Ji, and senior officers of the state government were specially present.”
The appointments align with the Assam government’s efforts to modernize its universities under the National Education Policy and regional initiatives. Chief Minister Sarma and Minister Pegu’s presence highlighted the state’s focus on fostering capable leadership to drive educational transformation.
Governor Acharya, who assumed office as Assam’s 32nd Governor on July 30, 2024, brings a deep connection to education. Starting as a teacher in Varanasi in 1973, he later spearheaded the “Child Education in the Village” movement. His prior roles as Governor of Sikkim and Manipur (additional charge) have cemented his reputation as a reform-driven leader.
