In a major boost to the academic community, the Assam government has expanded the ambit of the Chief Minister’s Jiban Anuprerana Scheme, making research scholars from 2021 onwards eligible for financial assistance.
Under the revised scheme, research scholars will receive ₹25,000, while Divyang (differently-abled) scholars will be granted ₹40,000 to support their academic and innovation pursuits.

Announcing the update, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the decision aims to “fuel the pursuit of knowledge and innovation” among Assam’s youth. The scheme, originally launched to provide a financial cushion to researchers, now covers a broader set of beneficiaries.
The financial assistance is expected to ease the economic burden on doctoral candidates and encourage higher research output across Assam’s universities and research institutions. “Scholars are the backbone of our knowledge economy. This support is a recognition of their hard work and potential,” the Chief Minister wrote on social media.
The expansion has been welcomed by academic circles, particularly those from marginalized and underrepresented groups. Scholars who enrolled from the year 2021 onwards will now be able to apply for the scheme through the prescribed government channels.
With this update, the Jiban Anuprerana Scheme reinforces Assam’s commitment to inclusive and progressive education policy, while aligning with national goals of promoting research and innovation at the grassroots level.
