In a tragic incident linked to the ongoing heatwave in Assam, a young police constable collapsed and died near Dighali Pukhuri in Guwahati on Thursday morning, reportedly due to extreme heat conditions.
The deceased has been identified as Hiteshwar Kalita, a junior constable with the 10th Battalion of Assam Police and a resident of Nalbari district. He was estimated to be between 30 and 35 years old.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 9 AM when Kalita was reportedly walking toward Panbazar in search of drinking water. Witnesses said he was wearing a blue shirt and half pants when he suddenly collapsed on the roadside. A bag believed to belong to him was found next to his body.
Authorities suspect that the scorching temperatures—part of a severe heatwave sweeping across parts of Assam—may have contributed to his untimely demise. Preliminary investigations have ruled out foul play, but a post-mortem examination will confirm the exact cause of death.
Police personnel from the Panbazar Police Station reached the spot shortly after the incident and launched a probe.
The sudden death of a serving constable while reportedly on duty has sparked concern over the safety of personnel working in extreme weather conditions.
Officials have urged people—especially those working outdoors—to take precautions against the heat, including staying hydrated and avoiding peak sun hours when possible.
The incident comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) continues to issue alerts over persistent heatwaves in northeastern India.
