Assam Congress has launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government, vowing to bring sweeping changes in land and economic policy if voted to power in 2026. The declarations came after the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC)’s day-long Extended Executive Meeting, held at the Manabendra Sharma Complex in Guwahati on Saturday.
Addressing the media after the meeting, AICC General Secretary and Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh asserted that the people of Assam are seeking change through the ballot, determined to end the “autocratic and corrupt rule” of Himanta Biswa Sarma. “Every citizen today, including children, is burdened with a debt of ₹50,000. People want a change, and under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi, Congress will form the next government in Assam,” Singh stated.
APCC President and Lok Sabha Deputy Leader of Opposition Gaurav Gogoi declared that Congress would launch a statewide anti-corruption campaign in September to expose the BJP’s misrule. “This campaign will shake Assam and keep BJP leaders awake at night,” he said, promising to implement progressive land reforms and inclusive development initiatives.
Gogoi announced that land illegally acquired by the CM and ministers would be seized and redistributed to the poor through the first Cabinet decision of the new Congress government. “Congress will not allow loot and injustice to continue. We will build a government based on transparency, equity, and constitutional values,” he said.
The extended executive meeting saw the adoption of key political and economic resolutions, focusing on rescuing Assam from financial crisis, employment generation, and safeguarding the rights of indigenous communities. Gogoi condemned the BJP government’s eviction drives targeting Bodos, Karbis, Tiwas, Rabhas, Mishings, and other marginalized communities, calling them “inhuman and unlawful.”
He also reiterated Rahul Gandhi’s statement from his Sualkuchi rally, promising that the people of Assam will see Himanta Biswa Sarma behind bars for his alleged corruption.
In a symbolic boost for the Congress, over 200 members from Bodo, Karbi, Rabha, and tea garden communities officially joined the party during the meeting. The event was attended by more than 350 party leaders and workers, including all 35 district Congress presidents and prominent state and national leaders.
Prominent attendees included AICC leaders Prithviraj Sathe, Manoj Chauhan, Vikas Upadhyay, and Debabrata Saikia (Election Coordination Committee Chairman), along with Pradyut Bordoloi (Manifesto Committee Chairman), Bhupen Bora (Campaign Committee Chairman), and Ripun Bora (Election Management Committee Chairman).
The meeting also saw participation from Working Presidents Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey, and Pradip Sarkar, former MPs Paban Singh Ghatowar, Bolin Kuli, Abdul Hamid, and Abdul Khaleque, as well as Mahila Congress President Meera Barthakur, Seva Dal President Deep Bayan, Youth Congress President Jubayer Anam, NSUI President Kaushik Kashyap, and other departmental heads.
As part of its renewed outreach, the Congress announced the launch of Tiranga Yatras across districts and blocks on August 15, marking Independence Day with a call for unity and constitutional values.
The meeting was efficiently coordinated by General Secretaries Bipul Gogoi and Pradyut Bhuyan, ensuring seamless execution of a pivotal moment in the party’s political roadmap for Assam.
