The Assam Cabinet on June 10, 2025, approved a significant increase in monthly incentives for Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers and supervisors across the state, recognizing their crucial role in strengthening grassroots healthcare delivery.
Under the new decision, ASHA workers will receive a fixed monthly honorarium of ₹4,000, up from the current ₹3,000, representing a 33% increase effective from October 1, 2025. Similarly, ASHA supervisors will see their monthly compensation rise from ₹9,000 to ₹10,200, marking a substantial ₹1,200 increment.
The enhanced incentive structure will be implemented through a cost-sharing mechanism between the central and state governments. For ASHA workers, the central government’s contribution will increase from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500, while the state government’s share will rise from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 monthly.
For ASHA supervisors, while the central government’s contribution remains unchanged at ₹7,500, the state government has committed to increasing its share from ₹1,500 to ₹2,700 per month, demonstrating the state’s enhanced investment in healthcare infrastructure.
Strengthening Healthcare at Grassroots Level
The decision comes as part of Assam’s broader strategy to strengthen primary healthcare services and ensure better support for frontline health workers who serve as the critical link between communities and the formal healthcare system. ASHA workers play a pivotal role in maternal and child health, immunization drives, and health awareness programs in rural and semi-urban areas.
This announcement reflects the state government’s recognition of the invaluable contribution of ASHA workers, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic when they served as the backbone of contact tracing, health monitoring, and vaccination efforts across Assam’s villages and towns.
Financial Commitment and Implementation
The revised incentive structure represents a significant financial commitment from the Assam government, with the state’s contribution for ASHA workers increasing by 50% and for supervisors by 80%. This enhanced funding underscores Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administration’s focus on healthcare sector strengthening.
The timing of the implementation from October 1, 2025, provides adequate preparation time for administrative processes and budget allocations. The decision is expected to boost morale among the approximately 26,000 ASHA workers operating across Assam’s 33 districts.
