The Court of the Sessions Judge in Kamrup district has granted bail to Assamese actress Nandini Kashyap in connection with the death of student Samiul Haque, who was killed after being hit by her speeding vehicle on July 25.
Advocate Bijon Mahajan appeared on behalf of Kashyap during the hearing and presented arguments before the court. Kashyap, who was earlier in police custody, had been produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court on August 1 and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.
During proceedings, the bench expressed strong dissatisfaction with the investigation conducted by the Guwahati traffic police. The court questioned the credibility of the Motor Vehicle Inspector’s report, pointing out that it had allegedly been prepared within 28 minutes of the incident. “How is it possible to prepare an MVI report in just 28 minutes?” the bench asked, while directing attention to potential lapses in the inquiry.
The case has triggered widespread outrage across Assam, with public anger directed at both the accident and the perceived mishandling of the investigation. Samiul Haque sustained severe injuries after being struck by the vehicle allegedly driven by Kashyap and died shortly after the crash.
The Sessions Court’s observations are expected to intensify scrutiny of the police investigation even as trial proceedings continue.
