Amritpal Singh, the Khadoor Sahib MP currently lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail, Assam, will be permitted to cast his vote in the upcoming Vice-Presidential election, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab has directed the Union Home Ministry and the Assam Chief Secretary to facilitate Singh’s voting process, as he remains a member of the electoral college for the election.
According to established procedure, detained lawmakers cast their vote through postal ballots provided on polling day. The marked and sealed envelope must reach the Election Commission before counting begins. To ensure compliance, the Commission has ordered Singh’s ballot to be dispatched from Dibrugarh by special air courier, ensuring its arrival in New Delhi by 6 p.m. on September 9, 2025.
Singh, a pro-Khalistan leader, has been detained under the National Security Act (NSA) since 2023. His family has announced plans to legally challenge his continued detention. Meanwhile, other associates of Singh previously jailed in Punjab have had their NSA charges withdrawn, with trials in separate cases now underway.
Authorities in Assam and Punjab have been directed to coordinate closely with the Election Commission and provide full compliance details.
