All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal on Monday took oath as a Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly after being elected from the 62 No. Binnakandi Assembly Constituency.
The oath-taking ceremony was held in the Assam Legislative Assembly in the presence of legislators and officials. AIUDF MLA Majibur Rahman from Dalgaon was also present on the occasion.
Ajmal's swearing-in marks a significant moment in Assam politics, bringing one of the state's most prominent minority leaders back to the Assembly. Over the past two decades, Ajmal has emerged as a key political figure in Assam through the growth of the AIUDF, a party he founded in 2005 following the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act.
Before entering active politics, Ajmal served as president of the reception committee of the Hojai session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha in 2004 and was associated with Darul Hadith, Jayanagar Madrassa.
His political breakthrough came during the 2006 Assam Assembly elections when his party, then known as the Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF), won 10 seats. Ajmal himself registered victories from both South Salmara and Jamunamukh constituencies.
He subsequently entered Parliament by winning the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and retained it in the 2014 and 2019 general elections. Under his leadership, the AIUDF emerged as a major political force in Assam and became the principal opposition party after securing 18 seats in the 2011 Assembly elections.
