Guwahati’s sporting infrastructure is set for a major upgrade as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a new state-of-the-art cricket stadium with a 20,000-person capacity will be completed in Amingaon by February 2026.
The chief minister made the announcement after inspecting the construction site on Saturday, confirming that the venue will be built to international standards and capable of hosting major cricket fixtures including One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 matches.
Very soon, Guwahati and its periphery along with major cities of Assam, will boast of world class sports infrastructure which will enable us to host any sporting event at a short notice.

“Guwahati already has two big stadiums, at Sarusajai and Barsapara. This one at Amingaon, where 20,000 people will be able to watch cricket together, will be completed by February next year,” Sarma told reporters during the site visit.
The new facility will complement Barsapara Stadium, currently the only international cricket venue in Northeast India, and Sarusajai Sports Complex, which serves as a multi-sport facility featuring football fields and an athletics track.
According to the chief minister, the Amingaon stadium will feature comprehensive modern amenities to support high-level cricket competitions. “It is a stadium with all modern facilities. Allied work related to the stadium will also be completed by February,” he said, adding that infrastructure development includes “adequate parking facilities” to accommodate large crowds for international matches.
The strategic addition of this third major sporting venue signifies Assam’s growing ambitions as a sporting destination in the region. Once completed, the stadium will strengthen the state’s infrastructure portfolio as it prepares for future hosting opportunities, including the National Games, which Assam previously hosted in 2007.
During his visit to Amingaon, the chief minister also reviewed construction progress on a new swimming pool and observed a practice session at the National Centre of Excellence badminton facility located in the same area, indicating a comprehensive approach to sports infrastructure development.
Beyond sporting events, Sarma envisions these venues serving dual purposes, suggesting they could host major cultural events and concerts similar to those held in neighboring Shillong, which has attracted prominent Indian and international performers.
