A large-scale civil defence mock drill was conducted today at the 10th Assam Police Battalion (APBn) premises in Kahilipara, Guwahati, in line with a directive from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The exercise, part of a nationwide civil defence preparedness initiative, was held simultaneously at 20 locations across Assam.
Organised by the Directorate General of Civil Defence, Assam, in collaboration with the District Administration of Kamrup(M), the mock drill commenced at 4:00 PM. It saw active participation from various emergency response agencies, including the Assam Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire & Emergency Services, Health Department, and local civil defence volunteers.
The mock drill aimed to test inter-agency coordination, rapid emergency response, and the effectiveness of systems designed to address war-like scenarios. A key component of the exercise was an “Air Raid Simulation Exercise,” which focused on aerial threat response, mitigation strategies, civilian evacuation, and damage control measures. The simulation was conducted under realistic conditions to improve the operational readiness of both civil and security agencies.
Deba Prasad Misra, Secretary of the Home & Political Department, Government of Assam, addressed the participants and observers, stressing the importance of such exercises. “These mock drills are essential in preparing both agencies and the public to respond effectively during disasters such as war or external aggression. Today’s exercise has undoubtedly strengthened our state’s emergency response capabilities,” Misra said.
Inspector General of Home Guards & Civil Defence, Arabinda Kalita, urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities during emergencies. He highlighted the importance of public support in managing situations like air raids.
The event was attended by senior officials, including Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh, District Commissioner of Kamrup Metro Sumit Sattawan, Joint Commissioner of Police (Guwahati) Ankur Jain, and Mayor of Guwahati Municipal Corporation Mrigen Sarania, who closely monitored the drill to assess response efficiency and identify potential improvements.
The drill concluded successfully, further enhancing the region’s preparedness to tackle emergencies.
