Former Assam unit president of the All India Trinamool Congress, Abhijit Majumdar, has resigned from the party, alleging that it has strayed from its founding principles and become increasingly focused on vote-bank politics.
Majumdar, who was associated with the Trinamool Congress in Assam for over two decades and was among its founding members in the state, submitted his resignation to party supremo Mamata Banerjee on Friday.
Announcing his decision, Majumdar said he had played a significant role in establishing and expanding the party’s presence in Assam but no longer agreed with its current direction.
“I was with the TMC in Assam from the very beginning and helped build the party in the state. However, I believe the party has lost its vision and has become a sectarian organisation that is more focused on pursuing specific vote banks than representing all communities,” he said.
The former state president also cited the example of Sherman Ali Ahmed, claiming that the party’s recent political decisions reflected a shift away from its earlier inclusive approach.
Majumdar further criticised the Trinamool Congress for what he described as a Bengal-centric outlook despite projecting itself as a national political party.
According to him, Assam and its political concerns have not received adequate attention within the party structure. He also stated that, as a Bengali Hindu leader, he had worked to represent and protect the interests of his community but felt that recent developments within the party no longer aligned with those objectives.
In his remarks, Majumdar alleged that the party had deviated from the ideals on which it was originally built and accused it of failing to uphold a balanced approach towards all sections of society.
Rejecting speculation that he might have been expelled, he clarified that he had voluntarily resigned from the organisation.
“I resigned from the party on my own. There is no question of expulsion. TMC had virtually no presence in Assam when we started, and we built the organisation from the ground up,” he said.
Majumdar’s resignation comes shortly after Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar stepped down as president of the All India Trinamool Mahila Congress, though she continues to remain a member of the party.
The development comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress is reassessing its organisational strategy following recent political setbacks and changing electoral dynamics.
