A midnight birthday celebration on a Guwahati flyover has landed 14 people, including a husband and wife, in police custody after a video of the event went viral on social media and triggered widespread criticism.

According to police, the incident took place around 12:30 am on June 22 on the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Flyover. Gautam Baruah allegedly organised the celebration for his wife's birthday on the flyover, transforming a section of the roadway into a party venue.

Videos circulating online showed the flyover decorated with balloons and party materials, while a red carpet was laid out on the road. Several vehicles were parked on the bridge as friends and family gathered to celebrate. The footage quickly drew public attention, with many raising concerns over the use of public infrastructure for a private event and the potential risks posed to motorists.

Following the viral spread of the video, Guwahati Police launched an investigation and detained Gautam Baruah for questioning. Authorities later detained a total of 14 people who were reportedly present during the celebration. Police also seized four vehicles allegedly used in connection with the event.

A case has been registered against Baruah under Sections 125, 285 and 270 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deal with offences related to public safety, negligent conduct and public nuisance. Officials said the legal action was initiated after preliminary findings indicated that the gathering had disrupted the normal use of the public roadway.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken based on the outcome of the inquiry. Authorities are also examining the role of other individuals involved in organising and participating in the event.
