Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that two more individuals have been apprehended for allegedly “defending Pakistan on Indian soil,” bringing the total number of arrests to 39 since the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir last month.

According to the Chief Minister’s statement on social media platform X Saturday night, the latest arrests took place in Hojai and South Salmara-Mankachar districts of Assam.

“#Update on Crackdown against traitors for defending Pakistan on Indian soil… A total of 39 Anti Nationals put behind bars till now,” Sarma wrote in his post.

The ongoing crackdown has already resulted in high-profile arrests, including opposition All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam, who was detained on sedition charges for allegedly defending Pakistan and its involvement in the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists.

This latest development comes just a day after CM Sarma made strong statements during a panchayat election campaign rally, where he threatened to “break the legs” of those who raised “Pakistan zindabad” slogans in the aftermath of the Jammu and Kashmir terror attack. During the same rally, he urged citizens to pray and support Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian Army in their efforts to bring Pakistani terrorists to justice.

The April 22 terror attack at Baisaran, a popular tourist destination in Pahalgam, south Kashmir, resulted in at least 26 fatalities and numerous injuries. The attack has intensified security measures and anti-terrorism efforts across India, with Assam’s government taking particularly strong action against those allegedly expressing support for Pakistan.
