Assam’s swimming contingent has made a significant impact at the ongoing Khelo India Youth Games 2025, with Janonjoy Jyoti Hazarika capturing gold in the men’s 50m butterfly event and Subhranshini Priyadarshini securing bronze in the women’s 200m freestyle competition.
Hazarika delivered a stellar performance in the pool, clinching the gold medal with an impressive time of 00:24.98 in the 50m butterfly event.
His achievement adds to his growing reputation as one of the state’s most promising swimming talents, following his notable performances at the 39th Sub Junior and 49th Junior National Aquatic Championship held in August 2023.
In the women’s events, Subhranshini Priyadarshini secured a bronze medal in the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:19.84.
This achievement follows her recent international success, where she won silver in the 1500m freestyle at the 55th Singapore Age Group Championship 2025 earlier this year.
The Khelo India Youth Games, now in its seventh edition, is being held across multiple venues in Bihar and Delhi from May 4 to 15, 2025. This multi-sport event brings together approximately 5,000 athletes from 36 states and Union Territories competing across 27 sporting disciplines, with swimming being one of the core Olympic sports featured in the competition.
Swimming has historically been one of Assam’s stronger sports at the Khelo India Youth Games. The northeastern state finished 17th overall at the previous edition held in Tamil Nadu with 24 medals, but is hoping to improve on that showing this year with standout performances like those from Hazarika and Priyadarshini.
