India’s neighbouring countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been shaken by the tremors of the earthquake. The earthquake’s magnitude has been estimated at 6.1 on the Richter scale. This earthquake has caused massive destruction in Afghanistan, and at least 255 people have died here. The US Geological Survey (USGS) has said that the quake’s epicentre was about 44 km from the city of Khost in Afghanistan and was at a depth of 51 km.

Apart from Afghanistan, tremors were felt in Lahore, Multan, Quetta and many other areas of Pakistan. Pakistani media reported that a low-intensity earthquake struck Islamabad and other parts of the country. Earthquake tremors were felt in Pakistan earlier on Tuesday as well. National Center for Seismology said the earthquake occurred in the neighbouring country at 2:24 pm, and its intensity was measured at 6.1 on the Richter scale.

Apart from Pakistan, earthquake tremors were also felt in India. Here an earthquake of 3.1 magnitudes occurred near Kevadia village of Narmada district in Gujarat. However, no loss of life or property was reported during this period. The 182-meter-high Statue of Unity is located near Kevadia village. Earthquake tremors were recorded on Monday night. The memorial’s public relations officer Rahul Patel said there was no damage to the Statue of Unity. It has been made in such a way that powerful earthquakes and cyclones do not damage it.

The Gandhinagar-based Earthquake Research Institute (ISR) said in a statement that the quake’s epicentre was 12 km east-southeast of Kevadia. “An earthquake of 3.1 magnitudes was recorded at 10:07 pm on Monday, with epicentre 12 km east-southeast (ESE) of Kevadia in south Gujarat at a depth of 12.7 km,” the ISR said. It said there is no report of any damage to life or property due to the earthquake.
