Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain has established a cutting-edge boxing academy in North Guwahati, marking a significant development for sports infrastructure in Assam. The facility, developed through the boxer’s personal initiative, represents her commitment to nurturing the next generation of boxing talent from her home state.
The academy is equipped with world-class training equipment sourced directly from Patiala, home to one of India’s premier sports institutes. This high-quality gear will provide aspiring boxers with training resources comparable to those used by elite athletes at national camps, bridging the gap between grassroots and professional training standards.
A key focus of the Lovlina Boxing Academy is its commitment to accessibility. The facility aims to provide affordable, high-quality training specifically targeting young boxers from remote regions of Assam who traditionally have limited access to professional coaching and infrastructure.
The official inauguration ceremony for the academy is scheduled for May 25, expected to draw sports administrators, coaches, and aspiring boxers from across the region. Following this flagship center in North Guwahati, plans are underway to establish additional facilities under the Lovlina Boxing Academy banner across other districts of Assam in the coming months.
Lovlina Borgohain has established herself as one of India’s most decorated boxers, making history with a series of remarkable achievements on the international stage. She won a bronze medal in the women’s welterweight (69kg) category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, becoming only the third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal, after MC Mary Kom and Vijender Singh. Lovlina further cemented her legacy by clinching the gold medal in the women’s middleweight (75kg) division at the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.
She also holds two bronze medals from the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2018 and 2019 and has been a consistent presence on the podium at major events, including a silver at the 2023 Asian Games and gold at the 2022 Asian Boxing Championships.
Additionally, she has earned medals at the India Open International Boxing Tournament, the President’s Cup, and the Asian Championships, marking her as a trailblazer for Assam and Indian women’s boxing.
Lovlina is the first female athlete from Assam to represent India at the Olympics and continues to inspire with her record of perseverance and excellence in the sport.
