Assam Director General of Police G.P. Singh and the entire Assam Police fraternity mourned the passing of former DGP D.N. Dutt in Hyderabad. The police force extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, including Dutt’s wife, children, and all grieving friends and relatives. The announcement came through a statement on social media.

As a mark of respect to the departed soul, Assam Police directed all its units to cancel New Year celebrations scheduled for December 31 and January 1. Additionally, unit flags were ordered to be flown at half-mast on January 1, 2024, in honor of D.N. Dutt’s contributions to the police force.

D.N. Dutt, born on December 2, 1946, was a distinguished IPS officer of the 1971 Batch of Assam-Meghalaya cadre. Throughout his career, he served in various capacities within the Assam Police, culminating in his appointment as the Director General of Police for Assam in 2005. His tenure continued until his superannuation on December 31, 2006.

Following his retirement, D.N. Dutt continued to serve the state, taking on roles such as a Member of the State Police Accountability Commission and later as the State Chief Information Commissioner. He was known for his unimpeachable integrity, earning recognition with the Governor’s Gold Medal in 1991 for meritorious service.

D.N. Dutt’s legacy extended beyond his policing duties. Before joining the police force, he was a professor at the esteemed Cotton College. Despite facing health challenges, including battling throat cancer in 1997, he remained dedicated to his duties and displayed unwavering commitment to the people of Assam.

The mortal remains of D.N. Dutt were scheduled to be flown from Hyderabad on January 1, 2024, reaching the Assam Police headquarters at 2 PM for final respects. The cremation ceremony was planned for the same day at 3:30 PM at Nabagraha Crematorium.

As a symbolic gesture of respect, the unit flags at all Assam Police Units and Organizations were flown at half-mast to honor the departed soul and recognize the significant contributions of D.N. Dutt to the Assam Police family.
