Himanta Biswa Sarma was born on 1 February 1969


He obtained a Bachelor's degree in English literature and a Master's degree in Political Science from Cotton College in Guwahati


In 2001, he was appointed as the Minister of State for Agriculture in the AGP-led government in Assam


In 2005, he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) party and was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Jalukbari constituency in Assam


He held several ministerial positions in the Congress-led government in Assam, including Health and Family Welfare, Education, Finance, Planning and Development, and others.


In 2015, he resigned from the Congress party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party


In 2016, he was elected as an MLA from the Jalukbari constituency on a BJP ticket and was appointed as the Cabinet Minister for Finance, Health and Family Welfare, Education, and others


In 2021, he was elected as the Chief Minister of Assam following the BJP's victory in the state assembly elections
