Five-time Asian Championship medalists Shiv Thapa and Amit Panghal along with six other boxers have confirmed their place in the Indian men’s boxing squad for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
These six boxers secured their places after registering victories in the finals of the trials held at Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala today. Veteran boxer Thapa has won a silver medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
He defeated Manish Kaushik 5-0 to secure his place in the 63.5kg weight category. While the silver medalist of the World Championships held in 2019, Panghal defeated Services boxer Deepak 4-1 to secure a place for himself in the 51kg weight category.
Besides Amit and Shiva Thapa, the other six boxers to cement their place in the Indian contingent for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham on the final day of the trials are 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Mohammad Husamuddin (57kg), Rohit Tokas (67kg). National champion Sumit (75kg), Ashish Kumar (80kg), Sanjeet (92kg) and Sagar (+92kg).
The boxers competed in eight different categories in the three-day trials for a place in the 2022 Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8.
On the other hand, the women’s trials for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games will be held next week at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi.
