The Monsoon Session of the Indian Parliament commences today, July 21, 2025, and is scheduled to run for 32 days, concluding on August 21, with 21 sittings. The session will pause on August 13-14 for Independence Day celebrations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the media before the session begins, setting the tone for what promises to be a heated parliamentary period. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju emphasized that running the House is a collective responsibility and assured that the Modi government is ready to discuss all issues, including claims surrounding US President Donald Trump and Operation Sindoor.
On Sunday, a meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), chaired by party president JP Nadda, was held to strategize for the session, with senior ministers and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders in attendance. Simultaneously, an all-party meeting took place, attended by 54 leaders, including Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, Kiren Rijiju, and JP Nadda, focusing on ensuring smooth parliamentary proceedings. Government sources indicate plans to introduce eight new bills and address nine pending ones during the session.
The opposition is gearing up to challenge the government on multiple fronts. Key issues include the special intensive revision of Bihar’s voter list, violence in Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, and India-China relations. The opposition has also raised concerns about the recent Ahmedabad plane crash, with initial investigation reports sparking various theories. Congress and other opposition parties are expected to press the government on accountability for the crash.
Additionally, the opposition has been vocal about Operation Sindoor, where India conducted strikes on nine terrorist hideouts in Pakistan on the night of May 6-7, 2025, using BrahMos missiles. While US President Donald Trump has claimed credit for preventing an India-Pakistan military conflict, the opposition has repeatedly questioned India’s foreign policy and sought details on losses incurred during the operation.
Ahead of the session, the opposition, under the INDIA bloc, held an online meeting on July 19, led by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. The bloc plans to corner the government on issues like the Bihar voter list revision, Operation Sindoor, Manipur violence, the Balasore self-immolation case, and the Air India plane crash. With the voter list issue pending in the Supreme Court and linked to the Election Commission, the government has agreed to discuss it.
The Monsoon Session is poised to be a critical platform for both legislative progress and intense debates, as the opposition seeks to hold the government accountable on pressing national and international issues.
