Meet Nandita Gorlosa – The first female Minister from the Hill District of Assam

On June 08, 2022, Assam CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced two new ministers in his Cabinet. One is Nalbari’s MLA, Jayanta Malla Baruah, and the other is Haflong’s MLA, Nandita Gorlosa.

In May 2021, Nandita Gorlosa was elected as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Haflong. She defeated Nirmal Langthasa of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 18,598 votes in the 2021 Assam Assembly election.

As Nandita Gorlosa took oath as a Cabinet Minister of Assam, She became the first female Politician from Hills District of Assam to take oath as a cabinet minister.

Nandita Gorlosa is the sister of Debolal Gorlosa, the Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council.

Before entering into Politics, Nandita serves at Haflong Govt College as a Lecturer in the Department of Zoology till 2018. Later she chooses to pursue her full-time political career.

Nandita did her Post Graduation from Cotton College under Gauhati University in Zoology in the year 2003.

In the year 2018 itself, she wins at North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council election from East Maibong Constituency. She was an executive member of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council. Currently she was the in-charge of Elementary & Higher Education and Archaeology & IT department.

After a gap of 20 years, it is noteworthy that she becomes a minister from Dima Hasao District. Before Nandita Gorlosa, Gobinda Chandra Langthasa, a veteran Politician and a Congress leader from Assam, serves as a cabinet minister (2001-2006) during the first phase of the Tarun Gogoi government.
