Tripura Adivasi Congress submitted a deputation at Siksha Bhavan on Monday, urging the official recognition of the Roman script (Roman Script in Kokborok) for Kokborok language textbooks and examination papers at all academic levels.

The protest, led by TPCC General Secretary Shabda Kumar Jamatia, began with a rally from Congress Bhavan in Agartala, which moved through the city streets and culminated in front of Siksha Bhavan. Addressing the media, Jamatia emphasized that the majority of the indigenous population prefers the Roman script and accused the government of disregarding their sentiment.

He condemned what he described as administrative efforts to sideline the Roman script despite its widespread acceptance. Referring to an RTI reply, Jamatia highlighted that only Bengali and Devanagari scripts are currently recognised by the state for Kokborok educational resources. “This kind of exclusion cannot be accepted. The Roman script represents the will of the people and must be granted official status,” he asserted.

The Congress party’s demand echoes the long-standing position of Tipra Motha and the IPFT, both allies in the state government, who have consistently advocated for the same cause. Meanwhile, the BJP-led government continues to remain silent on making a definitive decision regarding the script for Kokborok education.
