The sitting Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan, passed away on Friday evening at Apollo Hospital in Chennai, officials confirmed. He was 80 years old.
Ganesan was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Apollo Hospital following a collapse at his T Nagar residence on August 8, 2025, where he sustained head injuries. He was rushed to the hospital in an unconscious state and underwent surgery. Despite intensive monitoring and treatment, he succumbed to his condition at 6:23 pm on Friday, according to the Kohima Raj Bhavan Public Relations Officer.
The mortal remains of the late Governor will be placed at his T Nagar home, allowing political leaders and the public to pay their last respects.
Appointed as the 21st Governor of Nagaland on February 12, 2023, Ganesan assumed office on February 20 of the same year. His tenure was marked by his commitment to public service and nation-building.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing Ganesan as a “devout nationalist” in a post on X. “Pained by the passing of Nagaland Governor Thiru La. Ganesan Ji. He will be remembered as a devout nationalist, who dedicated his life to service and nation-building. He worked hard to expand the BJP across Tamil Nadu. He was deeply passionate about Tamil culture too. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister wrote.
Ganesan’s contributions to Tamil Nadu’s political landscape and his dedication to Tamil culture leave a lasting legacy. His passing has been met with widespread condolences from leaders and citizens alike.
