Mobile Date Services suspended for 5 days in Manipur – Here’s why

On 6th August, Special Secretary, Home department of Manipur issued an immediate order that stated ban on Mobile Data Service entirely in the State for the next 5 days. The order is issued to prevent any peace and public order disturbances in the State of Manipur.

As mentioned in the order, some anti-national elements use social media extensively to transmit images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the public’s passions. It also stated that social media has also become a handy tool for rumor-mongers and is being used to incite the general public, which might have severe repercussions for the law and order situation in the State.

As per the reports, at Phougakchao Ikhai Awang Leikai along Tiddim Road, NH-02, one Eco-Van was reportedly found burning set ablaze by 3/4 youths suspected to be of a community. The crime has created a tense communal situation and volatile law and order situation in the State.

The District Magistrate of Bishnupur has also imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC for two months across the valley district beginning Saturday evening.

Tension has been brewing in the State after All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) imposed an indefinite economic blockade along the national highways of the landlocked State on Friday morning.

The student body had demanded that the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Council Bill 2021 be tabled in the Assembly.
