The budget session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly was scheduled to begin on February 10, i.e. today. However, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla issued an order to cancel it a day before the session started.
The Governor took this decision of ‘null and void’ the session after Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned from his post on Sunday. This information was given in a notification issued by the Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretariat on Sunday evening.
The notification cites the Governor’s order under Article 174 (1) of the Indian Constitution, in which the order to convene the assembly session issued earlier on January 24, 2025, has been canceled with immediate effect.
On Sunday evening, N. Biren Singh met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla along with several of his cabinet colleagues and Manipur BJP President. With this, N. Biren Singh submitted his resignation to the Governor.
At the same time, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla accepted the resignation of N. Biren Singh on Sunday evening. Along with this, he requested Biren Singh to continue working as the acting Chief Minister until a new Chief Minister is appointed.
This move of N. Biren Singh has further increased political uncertainty in Manipur, which has been in the grip of ethnic violence for the last two years.
