The Government of India has formally initiated preparations for Census 2027, with a gazette notification issued on June 16, 2025, expressing its intent to conduct the national population enumeration exercise.
As part of the preparatory phase, a two-day national conference was organized on July 3 and 4 in New Delhi, bringing together Directors of Census Operations, senior officials from various directorates, and officers from the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India.
The conference focused on outlining the roadmap for the upcoming Census, emphasizing the integration of digital tools and streamlined administrative frameworks. Key agenda items included the finalization of administrative unit frames, the use of mobile applications for data collection, and the deployment of the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) for real-time oversight of census activities.
Also under discussion were plans for self-enumeration, an initiative aimed at enabling citizens to submit their own data through secure digital platforms. This approach is expected to reduce fieldwork load and enhance the accuracy and efficiency of data gathering.
The government also outlined training protocols for census functionaries to ensure a standardized and effective enumeration process across the country.
This update was provided by Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Nityanand Rai, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
Census 2027 will mark India’s first post-pandemic population count and is expected to be one of the most technologically advanced census operations undertaken to date.
