According to the notification, Dr. Kumar’s tenure as UPSC Chairman will commence on the day he assumes charge of the position. The appointment brings experienced administrative leadership to the Commission, which is responsible for conducting the prestigious Civil Services Examination and other competitive exams for government positions.
Dr. Kumar brings extensive administrative experience to his new role, having served as a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from the 1985 batch of the Kerala cadre. His most notable previous position was as Defence Secretary of India, a role he held from August 2019 to October 2022 during a period that saw significant defense modernization initiatives and the implementation of the Agnipath scheme for military recruitment.
The Union Public Service Commission plays a critical role in India’s governance system as the constitutional body responsible for recruiting personnel for All India Services, Central Services, and public sector undertakings. The UPSC conducts several nationwide competitive examinations, including the Civil Services Examination, Combined Defence Services Examination, National Defence Academy Examination, Naval Academy Examination, and Combined Medical Services Examination.
