Early on Wednesday, a passenger train and an approaching freight train crashed in northern Greece, sparking fires and injuring dozens of people, according to police and fire service officials.
Following the collision in Tempe, around 380 kilometres (235 miles) north of Athens, a number of train cars derailed, and at least three of them caught fire. In the nearby city of Larissa, hospital officials reported that at least 60 individuals had been hurt, with 25 of them in serious condition.

“The collision was really forceful.” It’s a bad night right now. The regional governor of central Thessaly, Costas Agorastos, said on state television that it was difficult to convey the scene.
Several neighbouring towns sent ambulances to help with the transport of the injured. While searching for trapped passengers in the wrecked rail cars in the dense smoke, rescuers wearing headlamps pulled chunks of bent sheet metal.
Representatives from the government said that two more hospitals in Larissa have been put on emergency duty and that the army has been called to help save people.
