In a move to enhance safety and security, the historic Saraighat Bridge over the Brahmaputra in Assam will soon be equipped with CCTV cameras. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the need for such surveillance to prevent suicide attempts, road accidents, and other crimes on the bridge. The absence of CCTV surveillance has made it challenging to prove cases of suicide attempts.
The chief minister has initiated the installation of CCTV cameras on Saraighat Bridge and instructed the Guwahati Smart City Limited to expedite the process. The cameras are expected not only to prevent suicide attempts but also to contribute to law and order maintenance and crime control in the city.
The installation of CCTV cameras is part of broader efforts to improve safety and security in the city. In 2019, a ‘city surveillance’ project was initiated to install 4,000 CCTV cameras, but it was later scrapped. The new initiative aims to leverage technology for enhanced public safety.
