Guwahati is poised for a dramatic transformation of its hospitality sector with plans for 11 new five-star hotels that will establish the city as the premier luxury accommodation hub of Northeast India, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday.
The Chief Minister performed the ‘Bhoomi Poojan’ for two major Marriott International properties that will be developed with an investment of Rs 500 crore. The ceremony marks the beginning of construction for Marriott Resort & Spa and Fairfield by Marriott, both part of the global hospitality giant’s expansion into the region.
With 11 five star hotels in the pipeline, Guwahati is becoming a hub for global hospitality chains who are seizing the opportunity to cater to the huge demand in the region.

“Guwahati gets a leg up on attracting global hospitality chains!” Sarma stated in a post on social media platform X. “These two upcoming projects will be huge and unique as they will be developed on 76 bigha (over 25 acre) of land.”
The rapid implementation of these projects highlights the state government’s commitment to fast-tracking development initiatives. “The MOUs for these projects worth Rs 500 crore were signed during the Advantage Assam 2.0 investment summit earlier this year and work has begun within just three months,” the Chief Minister emphasized, showcasing the administration’s efficiency in converting investment commitments into actual projects.
Major Hotel Chains Investing in Guwahati
The Chief Minister provided details of other luxury hotel projects in the pipeline, demonstrating the scale of hospitality sector expansion in the city:
- Four additional Marriott hotels beyond the two currently commencing construction
- Two new Taj properties entering the market
- One new Lemon Tree hotel development
- Expansion of existing Radisson property by 100 more keys
- Replacement of the current Vivanta with a new Taj property
