A new Special Development Zone (SDZ) aimed at attracting service sector investment is set to be established in Sarusajai, Guwahati, according to an announcement shared by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The upcoming zone will span 80.79 acres of prime land and is strategically positioned adjacent to the Guwahati Bypass, offering exceptional connectivity to key transportation infrastructure. According to the official announcement, the development will feature proximity to the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) and provide easy access to Guwahati Airport, making it an ideal location for businesses requiring frequent transportation connections.
A key highlight of the development is its dedicated power supply infrastructure, addressing one of the critical requirements for service sector operations that depend on reliable electricity. The promotional materials indicate the zone is specifically designed for “prospective players in the service sector who are looking to invest in Guwahati,” suggesting a focus on IT services, business process outsourcing, financial services, and other knowledge-based industries.
The aerial view included in the announcement shows the development area outlined in red, with an existing substation marked within the zone, indicating that some infrastructure elements are already in place. The location appears to offer a mix of developed and undeveloped land, allowing for customized facility construction.
This initiative aligns with Assam’s broader economic development strategy to diversify beyond traditional agricultural and natural resource-based industries by attracting service sector investments. The state has been actively working to position Guwahati as a gateway to Northeast India and a connecting point to Southeast Asian markets.
