In a gruesome crime that has sent shockwaves through Guwahati, police have arrested a woman and her lover for the murder of her 10-year-old son whose body was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase abandoned in bushes near Basistha area.
Authorities revealed on Sunday that the victim, identified as Mrinmoy Barman, a Class V student of Navodaya Jatiya Vidyalaya, was murdered as part of a calculated plot by the accused who reportedly viewed the child as an “obstacle” to their relationship.
The horrific discovery was made by a local scrap collector who noticed a suspicious black trolley bag along the deserted roadside between Basistha and Indira Nagar. Upon approaching the partially opened bag, the man was horrified to see human legs protruding from it and immediately alerted the police.
According to police, the boy’s mother, Dipali Rajbongshi, who works at a local clinic, had initially filed a missing person complaint for her son. However, inconsistencies in her statement raised red flags for investigators who subjected her to further questioning.
“Under sustained interrogation, both Dipali and her partner Jyotimoy Haloi, a temporary employee at the Accountant General’s office, broke down and confessed to the murder,” the official stated.
Police investigation revealed that on the day of the murder, the accused lured the unsuspecting child from their Jayanagar residence by offering him chocolates. They then transported him on a motorcycle to Basistha, carrying with them a black suitcase that investigators believe was specifically purchased to dispose of the body.
The case has horrified local residents, with many expressing shock that a mother could be involved in such a heinous crime against her own child. Child protection advocates have called for the strictest punishment for the accused, noting the particularly heinous nature of the crime.
Police have registered a case of murder and criminal conspiracy against both accused. They will be presented before the court shortly, where authorities are expected to request maximum custody period for further investigation into the case.
