To tackle traffic congestion, the Gauhati High Court has directed a panel to look into the traffic congestion in the city.
Rita Das Mozumdar filed a petition to look into the matter, and the Gauhati High Court issued directives for forming a committee.
The concerned citizen Mozumdar had highlighted the haphazard and hazardous condition of traffic congestion in Guwahati, leading to health risks and a rise in cases of accidents.
The HC directed the committee’s comprehensive assessment of the traffic congestion in the city by visiting the main roads, markets and other places in Guwahati where traffic congestions are usual and suggested measures about manually handling the vehicular movement in these areas to tackle the issue.

The deputy commissioner of police of the traffic division in Guwahati, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) deputy municipal commissioner and an officer nominated by the Assam State Legal Services Authority will be there in the three-member committee.
Additionally, to ensure proper proceedings, Adil Hussain, the state transport secretary and Nitul Gogoi, inspector general of police, were asked to work as nodal officers in the committee.
The court order read, “The officers of the committee are permitted to take the aid of the police staff as well for this purpose, if necessary.” By August 22, the HC has asked the committee to submit their preliminary report.
It is worth mentioning that, due to construction work in several locations in the city, citizens face many difficulties commuting around. On top of it, waterlogging in many areas also hamper smooth commutes throughout the city.
