Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati has achieved remarkable growth in passenger traffic for the financial year 2024-25, recording a 7.67% increase over the previous year and handling a total of 6.57 million passengers, according to an official statement from airport management.
The passenger breakdown shows strong domestic performance with 3.26 million domestic arrivals and 3.30 million domestic departures, while international traffic reached 91,594 passengers—the highest international footfall since October 2021. This international passenger surge represents a significant recovery and growth trajectory for the airport’s global connectivity.
A standout moment came on December 12, 2024, when LGBI Airport set a single-day passenger record by serving 21,444 travelers, including transit passengers. This milestone demonstrates the airport’s growing capacity to handle peak traffic volumes efficiently.
The airport’s expansion of international route network has been a key driver of growth, with new direct flights to Paro (Bhutan), Malaysia, and Singapore significantly boosting both international passenger numbers and Aircraft Traffic Movements (ATMs). The enhanced connectivity reflects the airport’s strategic importance as a gateway to Southeast Asia and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
“LGBI Airport has expanded its international route network, adding direct flights to Paro, Malaysia, and Singapore, which has increased both international passenger numbers and Aircraft Traffic Movements,” said an airport spokesperson. The facility recorded 45,409 domestic ATMs and 1,009 international ATMs during FY 2024-25.
Domestic connectivity has also been strengthened with the launch of three new routes: Guwahati-Ahmedabad, Guwahati-Durgapur, and Guwahati-Ziro. These additions enhance regional connectivity and support trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the Northeast and other parts of India.
The most striking achievement has been in cargo operations, where LGBI Airport demonstrated exceptional growth by handling 12,893 metric tonnes (MT) in FY 2024-25, compared to 4,550 MT in FY 2023-24. This represents a remarkable 183.91% year-on-year increase and marks the highest cargo volume processed since October 2021.
As the airport continues to expand its capacity and connectivity, these growth trends are expected to contribute significantly to the region’s economic development and position Guwahati as an increasingly important aviation hub in eastern India.
