In a move aimed at decongesting key city zones and improving urban mobility, the Assam government has announced the development of a dedicated parking zone at the Old Jail Campus in Fancy Bazar, one of Guwahati’s busiest commercial hubs.
Spread over 2,700 square meters, the upcoming facility is expected to streamline traffic flow, reduce illegal roadside parking, and enhance public convenience in the area.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the initiative is part of a larger urban infrastructure upgrade designed to modernize traffic management in the state capital.

“To reduce congestion and ease mobility in key city areas, a dedicated parking zone is being developed at the Old Jail Campus, Fancy Bazar. This will help relieve traffic pressure in the central commercial district,” the Chief Minister posted.
The Fancy Bazar area—home to major markets, offices, and transport points—has long faced issues with traffic bottlenecks and unregulated parking. The upcoming facility will not only offer organized parking but also free up road space for smoother vehicular movement and pedestrian access.
