Assam’s Dibrugarh district experienced a third consecutive day of rainfall on Thursday, resulting in waterlogging across several areas of the city. Despite the challenging conditions, residents continued with their daily routines while navigating the inconvenience of submerged roads.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Dibrugarh recorded 4 mm of rainfall on Wednesday and forecasts that the city will likely experience a “generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers” on Thursday. The persistent precipitation, though relatively light, has been sufficient to disrupt normal functioning in parts of the city where drainage systems appear to be struggling with the continuous inflow.
Meanwhile, the weather agency has issued a more severe warning for other parts of Assam, particularly the western districts. “Heavy (7-11 cm in 24 Hrs) to Very Heavy rain (12-20 cm in 24 hrs) is very likely to occur at isolated places over and Thunderstorm and Lightning along with Gusty wind speed 40-50 kmph over Bajali, Barpeta & Bongaigaon districts,” the IMD stated in its alert for May 14.

The anticipated heavy rainfall in these western districts raises concerns about potential flooding and related hazards, especially given that these areas have historically been vulnerable to monsoon-related disasters. Local authorities are likely implementing preparedness measures to mitigate potential impacts.
The meteorological activity in Assam is part of a broader pattern of unsettled weather across northern India. The IMD has also issued warnings for Uttarakhand, where severe weather conditions including thunder, lightning, hailstorms, heavy rain, and gusty winds between 40-50 km/hr are expected to affect Dehradun, Pauri, and Tehri districts on Thursday.
