The long-time co-artistes of iconic Assamese musician Zubeen Garg have announced the formation of a new musical band titled “JONTRO,” dedicated to keeping alive the timeless music and legacy of the legendary artist.
Partha, Raja, Diganta, Dipkesh, Priyanku, Rishav, and Anjan—who worked closely with Zubeen Garg for decades—have decided to continue their musical journey together following the tragic demise of the music maestro.
“For a long time, we were an integral part of Zubeen Garg’s musical life. It is still difficult to accept that he is no longer with us. However, life must go on, and the least we can do in his memory is to preserve and present his songs and music. This band is our tribute to Zubeen Garg,” the band members stated.
JONTRO will perform exclusively songs sung, composed, or written by Zubeen Garg. Renowned Assamese singer Rupam Bhuyan will feature as the band’s vocalist.
Beyond honouring Zubeen Garg’s musical heritage, JONTRO aims to encourage and nurture emerging artists. The band plans to introduce two new singers—one male and one female—who will be mentored and groomed before being formally presented to audiences.
The band members appealed for blessings and encouragement from people across Assam and the Northeast. “Their support will help preserve and celebrate the immortal music of Zubeen Garg,” they said.
The initiative comes months after Zubeen Garg’s untimely death in Singapore in September, which left a void in Assamese music that his former collaborators now seek to address through collective remembrance.
