A major internal conflict has surfaced within the Assam Pradesh unit of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) as its President, Romen Ch Borthakur, has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the party’s Vice President, Dulu Ahmed, accusing him of sending threatening messages, public abuse, and harassment.
In the FIR submitted to the Officer In-Charge of Dispur Police Station in Guwahati, Borthakur alleges that on May 2, 2025, Ahmed sent him multiple WhatsApp messages between 1:25 PM and 1:36 PM containing vulgar language and threats of dire consequences. He also stated that Ahmed verbally abused him in public at Junayagarh, Janapath Road, Guwahati, using “naked and unparliamentary” language without any provocation.
The matter escalated further on May 6 when Borthakur received another threatening message from Sanjib Mahanta of Sualkuchi, reportedly a close associate of Dulu Ahmed. The message warned Borthakur of harm by May 12, 2025. The FIR includes screenshots of the messages and calls for immediate police action to ensure Borthakur’s safety and dignity.

The police have acknowledged the receipt of the complaint and are examining the submitted evidence. Copies of the FIR have also been sent to the Police Commissioner of Guwahati, the ADGP SB in Kahilipara, and the DGP in Ulubari.
This political development is not just a legal matter but a sign of serious factionalism within the Assam unit of the Trinamool Congress, as both Borthakur and Ahmed share a long and complex political history.
Romen Ch Borthakur and Dulu Ahmed are former Congress leaders
Both Romen Ch Borthakur and Dulu Ahmed were formerly associated with the Indian National Congress. Borthakur contested the 2021 Assam Assembly Election from the Jalukbari constituency against current Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma but lost by a significant margin. He subsequently left Congress and joined the Trinamool Congress, rising to become its state president.
Dulu Ahmed, also a former Congress leader, later joined the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), where he served as Vice President. He contested the 2021 Assembly Election from the Hajo constituency under the AJP banner but was defeated. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he ran as an independent candidate from the Barpeta constituency but again failed to secure a win. Following this, he joined the Trinamool Congress and currently holds the position of Vice President in the party’s Assam unit.
The FIR filed by a sitting party president against his vice president has sent shockwaves through Assam’s political circles. It raises serious questions about internal unity within the Trinamool Congress in the state, especially as the party tries to expand its footprint in the Northeast.
As of now, no response has come from Dulu Ahmed regarding this incident. With both leaders having long political careers and recent electoral ambitions, this internal battle could have significant implications for the party’s future in Assam.
