The Regional Meteorological Centre of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in four districts of Assam on February 1st and 2nd, 2023.
The districts expected to see stormy weather are Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Charaideo in the northeastern state.
Meteorologists at the Guwahati-based Regional Meteorological Centre made the predictions based on local weather models and data analysis.
Citizens in the impacted districts are advised to take precautions during their daily commutes and outdoor activities over the next two days. Seeking indoor shelter during storms and avoiding metal structures/appliances can help reduce lightning strike risk.
The IMD is India’s national weather forecasting agency operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. Through its network of regional meteorological centers and weather stations, it provides state and district-level forecasts to help communities prepare for upcoming rain, storms and other weather events.
While thunderstorms are common in Assam during the pre-monsoon months, their frequency and locations can vary across years. The latest predictions by meteorologists will guide citizens on what to expect over this week.
