A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Assam on Sunday evening, sending tremors across large parts of the Northeast. The quake, recorded at 4:41 p.m., had its epicentre about 16 km from Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district, according to preliminary data.
Strong shaking was reported across Assam, particularly in districts such as Tezpur, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, and Guwahati, where residents rushed out of homes and offices in panic. Tremors were also felt in neighbouring states including Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, as well as in parts of Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and southern China.
