Celebrated Assamese singer Gayatri Hazarika passed away at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati on May 16, 2025, following a prolonged battle with colon cancer. She was 44 years old. Hospital officials confirmed that the singer breathed her last at approximately 2:15 PM, ending her courageous fight against the illness that had challenged her in recent years.

Hazarika rose to prominence with her hauntingly beautiful rendition of “Xora Pate Pate Phagun Naame,” a track that became her signature piece and established her distinctive voice in Assamese music. Her versatile vocal talents also brought life to beloved songs like “Rati Rati Mor Xoon” and “Ohar Dore Ubhoti Aatori Gola,” showcasing her remarkable emotional range and artistic depth.

“She fought bravely till the end,” confirmed Hitesh Baruah from Nemcare Hospital, who noted the profound impact Hazarika had on both her professional colleagues and personal acquaintances throughout her career and illness.

Born and raised in Assam, Hazarika carved a unique niche in the region’s music industry by skillfully blending traditional Assamese musical elements with contemporary influences. This innovative approach garnered her a dedicated following that transcended generational boundaries. Her official Facebook page, which has nearly 2,000 followers, identifies her as an Indian playback singer and live performer known for soul-stirring music.

Beyond her recorded work, Hazarika was renowned for her captivating live performances, where her powerful vocal delivery and emotional engagement with audiences created memorable musical experiences. Her stage presence complemented her studio recordings, establishing her as a complete artist whose impact extended beyond albums.

The news of her passing has triggered an outpouring of grief across Assam’s cultural landscape. Tributes have flooded social media platforms, with fans and fellow artists remembering her contributions to Assamese music. On X (formerly Twitter), admirers have acknowledged both her exceptional talent and her courage in facing her illness, with one user describing her as a “highly talented vocalist” who fought bravely against a “dreadful disease.”
