Guwahati police have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of 27-year-old Assamese television actor Mriganka Barman, who was fatally stabbed on Tuesday in the basement parking area of Silver Arcade Marketing Complex in Garchuk. The accused, identified as Raju Ali (also known as Jan Mohammad Ali), 30, was apprehended by a team from Gorchuk Police Station from Dampur in Hajo area within hours of the crime.
According to police reports, authorities responded to an emergency call reporting a serious assault at approximately 4:00 PM. Officers arriving at the scene found Barman, a resident of Japarkuchi in Nalbari district, critically injured with multiple stab wounds. Despite being rushed to Excel Care Hospital, the young actor succumbed to his injuries.
“Using CCTV footage and technical surveillance, we were able to identify and track down the suspect quickly,” said a senior police official involved in the investigation. “Both the alleged murder weapons – a knife and a lathi – have been recovered, and forensic experts have thoroughly examined the crime scene.”
Preliminary findings suggest the murder stemmed from a personal dispute. “Our investigation indicates a love triangle involving the victim, the accused, and a woman as the likely motive behind this brutal attack,” the official stated.
Staff at the Hi City Inn Hotel at Garchuk reported that Barman had checked in with a woman around 1:00 PM on the day of the incident. “They left the hotel after approximately two to three hours, and the assault occurred shortly afterward in the parking lot,” said a hotel employee who requested anonymity.
CCTV footage reportedly captured the violent attack as well as its aftermath, showing a severely injured Barman staggering out of the hotel parking area. According to witnesses, Ali allegedly struck Barman in the head with a knife before stabbing him multiple times.
Police launched an immediate investigation after the incident, utilizing both technical evidence and witness statements to track down Ali. According to authorities, the accused has reportedly confessed to the crime during initial questioning.
Barman was known for his roles in several Assamese television serials and had built a following in the regional entertainment industry. His shocking murder has sent waves through Assam’s entertainment community, with colleagues expressing disbelief and sorrow at his untimely death.
